Sports Access Hearing Scheduled

January 24, 2012

Dear ,
Parents who are interested in sports access for their high school students have the opportunity to participate in the legislative process and help make it happen!
Delegate Rob Bell has introduced a bill again this year that will allow homeschoolers to try out for interscholastic sports. HB 947 will be heard for the first time this Thursday in a House Education Subcommittee. This is the first critical step in the bill’s passage. If HB 947 fails at the first hearing, sports access ends for the year.
Below you’ll find more information on the action we expect to take place this week and what you can do.

HEARING ON SPORTS ACCESS SCHEDULED
The House Subcommittee on Students and Early Education has scheduled a hearing this Thursday, January 26, at 7:30 a.m. to discuss HB 947. The hearing will take place in Room 5 East in the General Assembly Building. You can find directions and parking information here.
Delegate Rob Bell (R-Charlottesville) has proposed legislation that will allow homeschoolers to try out for sports at their local high school. The legislation does not infringe on the rights of homeschool parents who do not want their students to participate.
Delegate Bell expects the opposition–the Virginia High School League, the Virginia Education Association, and the Virginia Association of School Superintendents–to argue strongly against homeschool participation. He is asking that homeschool parents and students who support sports access join him at the hearing. “To help balance their arguments, we need as many homeschoolers to come as can,” said Bell in a recent email message. Your show of support by being at the hearing will make a difference.
Thank you for keeping the legislative session in your prayers! Watch for more updates, and check HEAV’s blog or Facebook page for current postings.
