A lot of the work at HEAV is done by volunteers—busy families just like yours who see a need and get involved! HEAV volunteers are an integral part of making a difference for homeschoolers in our state.

YEAR-ROUND VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTIONS - OVERVIEW
Office Volunteer
Do you have a few hours to donate each week? Or perhaps you have a mature teen looking for some office experience? HEAV needs volunteers to help one or more days a week, or for a few hours at a time, in our Richmond office. Gain experience answering office phones, processing orders, assembling packets for shipping, and working on other special projects. Volunteer today!

Neighborhood Volunteer
Spread the word about HEAV to others in your neighborhood! We need volunteers to help us distribute magazines, convention brochures, and information. Volunteer today!

Virtual Volunteer
Don’t let transportation challenges, limited time, or a physical disability hold you back. At HEAV, you can volunteer virtually! If you have computer access and the necessary skills, HEAV is now offering the opportunity for you to do volunteer work over the Internet. This virtual volunteer service might include entering data, proofreading, laying out web pages, helping with publicity, or assisting with a number of other tasks. If you are comfortable on the computer and want to bless the homeschool community with your skills, virtual volunteering may be a perfect fit for you. Volunteer today!

Group Projects Volunteer

Special Projects Volunteer
HEAV handles a lot of special projects throughout the year, such as Box Tops for Education, Food Lion Shop and Share, and the Ukrops’ Golden Gift Certificate programs. We need people who will be responsible for each of these programs and who will work to increase homeschooler and community participation. Volunteer today

CONVENTION VOLUNTEERS

We also need help getting ready for the convention! We’re currently looking for office volunteers, a convention public relations coordinator, and a convention facilitator (see descriptions below).

Convention Season Office Volunteer
Due to the increased convention workload, the HEAV Richmond office could use volunteers to come in one day a week (any day M-F) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help answer phone calls and assist with convention registration and other office duties. The need is from now until the convention. This is a great opportunity for a responsible teenager or young adult to get office experience. Volunteer moms will also be greatly appreciated. Convention Public Relations Coordinator
HEAV is currently looking to fill a stipend position for public relations coordinator for our annual convention. This person will work closely with the convention director, executive director, and publications director to develop and carry out a PR program for the convention. Tasks will include working with the media and publications to present a consistent and compelling message regarding the convention. This position requires year-round work on development and implementation of the PR plan. Hours during the off-season will be minimal with an increased time commitment as convention season nears. The individual selected for this position must have excellent written and verbal skills and be a self-starter who is able to work with minimum supervision. Convention Facilitator
Are you an experienced homeschooler? Do you love HEAV's annual convention? Do you have administrative and people skills you would like to share? HEAV is currently looking to fill a part-time position for a convention facilitator. The schedule is flexible and can be coordinated with existing staff and the executive director. This person will work closely with the executive director and the convention director to ensure tasks pertaining to the convention are completed in a timely manner. This is a year-round job with lighter hours in the off-season and heavier hours during the convention season. Individuals applying for this position must love working with people, have excellent oral and written skills, be detail-oriented and well organized, be technically competent with Microsoft Office products, and enjoy taking initiative on a multitude of fronts. YEAR-ROUND STIPEND POSITIONS
Convention Public Relations Position

Director of Development
HEAV is currently looking for a part-time/commission-based director of development. This person will work closely with the executive director to develop fund-raising events and the HEAV donor base. This new position has tremendous potential for growth and can be both rewarding and exciting since its success will lead to improved services and opportunities for homeschoolers across the state. Individuals interested in this position must be self-starters and have the ability to work with limited supervision. The individual must present a professional image and have a solid understanding of homeschooling and HEAV. Excellent written and verbal skills are a must. This position will require some outside work, with the balance of work being done from home. Office equipment and administrative help are available. Resource Center Development Coordinator
Do you have a passion for resources and homeschooling? Are you creative, organized, and an articulate communicator? Do you work and play well with others? Are you able to work independently as well? If so, read on! HEAV is looking for help to develop our resource center. Duties include evaluating products for inclusion in the store, identifying and targeting niche markets, and suggesting and helping develop new HEAV products and promotions. The successful candidate would chair the resource committee and work closely with the executive director, office staff, and publications staff. YEAR ROUND VOLUNTEER DESCRIPTIONS - DETAILED
Distribution Coordinator - Neighborhood Volunteer
The Distribution Coordinator will be responsible for working with the office administrator in the HEAV office each quarter to allocate the magazines to each local distributor. He or she will also be responsible for communicating with the distributors as necessary. 

Distributor Network - Neighborhood Volunteer
This is a team of people who will help distribute the HEAV magazine throughout the state. They are responsible for delivering The Virginia Home Educator magazine to doctor's offices, libraries, and other likely spots in their localities so it can be picked up and read by interested people. This would involve one or two days of distribution per issue, four times a year.

Information Network - Neighborhood Volunteer
The Information Network will be a team of people who will help us get our message out to churches and groups throughout the state. We are looking for people who will serve as a local point of contact for MOPS groups, church groups, support groups, etc., and who will distribute information and literature for HEAV. If you are part of a group (or groups) that would appreciate hearing about all that HEAV has to offer, you can be an important part of our mission on an as-needed basis.

Publicity Network - Virtual Volunteer
The Publicity Network will be a team of people willing to help us contact the media and get the word out about HEAV and our annual convention. Individuals can volunteer to take on a small piece of the job, such as calling all the radio stations in a certain county, or posting information about HEAV events to Yahoo/message groups.

Web Layout Assistant - Virtual Volunteer
The Web Layout Assistant will help in laying out new content on the HEAV website (formatting pages and articles). We use an Internet-based management system (MODx), which can be accessed anywhere via an Internet connection, so the assistant can work from any location. Assistant should have good computer skills (familiarity with Word documents, copying and pasting, etc.), and a desire to learn. This particular position is best suited for a homeschooled high school student interested in learning how to lay out content on the Internet.

Web Content Development Assistant - Virtual Volunteer
We are continually searching for new articles and helpful content to put on our website. The Web Content Development Assistant would be responsible for helping to find uplifting information on a variety of different topics.

Benefits Coordinator - Special Projects Volunteer
This position involves researching and recommending new member benefits for the organization and ensuring that member benefits are up-to-date on the website and in HEAV literature.

Special Programs Coordinators - Special Projects Volunteer
Our Special Programs Coordinators will work to advertise and promote the use of special fundraising programs to help generate revenue for HEAV. This currently includes Box Tops for Education, Food Lion Shop and Share, and the Ukrops’ Golden Gift Certificate program. We need people who will be responsible for each of these programs and who will work to increase homeschooler and community participation.

Field-Trip/Educational Opportunities Team - Special Projects Volunteer
The Field-Trip/Educational Opportunities Team will be responsible for searching the state for educational and field-trip opportunities and collaborating with the Benefits Coordinator to gain discounts for our members at museums, historical sites, and special events. Many permanent and limited-time educational programs are available throughout the state, and we want to be sure the information is available via the HEAV Update, website, and magazine.
