Dear Leaders,
Come and have a blast with Jessica! Join fellow leaders for encouragement and lots of fun as Texas state leader Jessica Hulcy, national speaker and co-author of KONOS Curriculum, shares how she used the concept of teamwork, hospitality, and shoes--yes, shoes--to help build a support group that goes beyond support and establishes a community of homeschoolers who serve each other-you won't want to miss it!
As a show of our appreciation for your service to the homeschoolers in your community, you are invited to be our guest at HEAV's Support Group Leader Luncheon on Friday, June 8, at 11:30 a.m.
The luncheon is our gift to current support group leaders who register for the convention. Please extend this invitation to co-leaders, coordinators, newsletter editors, and others who have faithfully served with you in a leadership capacity.
In addition to lunch there will be lots of laughs and good fellowship. We will be giving away incredible gifts donated by our exhibit hall vendors who also want to recognize the important work you do.
To help us in planning this extra-special event, please make your reservation by May 28. Reservations can be made by calling our office at 804-278-9200. You can also update your support group contact information and request more convention brochures for your group!
I'm looking forward to a great time with you!

Make Your Group Known!
With so much to learn as a homeschooler, it isn't surprising that some homeschoolers might fail the copyright test. The Educational Fair Use Policy can be confusing, making it easy for educators--even home educators--to think it is okay to copy something if it is for the education of children. But exactly what are we teaching those children when we break the law for free material?
A group of authors and publishers has developed an informative copyright awareness site to educate the educators. It includes a short video and a "Copyright Quiz." Supporting copyright literacy, this group offers the video free for anyone to use on their website or to show at a conference, support group meeting, homeschool co-op, or other venue. The educational video will be available June 1 on YouTube.com.
Anyone can receive copyright enlightenment through information on the copyright ethics awareness website ( homeschoolcopyright.com). There are articles written by publishers, lawyers, and homeschool parents detailing what homeschooling families should know about copyright law. You'll also read about educational fair use, plagiarism, and personal integrity. While you're there, take the "Copyright Quiz" and grab the "Help Fight Copyright Ignorance" website button for your own or your group's site.
HEAV Needs You!
Yes! We need you to do what you do best! Please volunteer your expertise and help all the potential homeschooling parents, the first-year homeschoolers, and those who have been at it for a while, but still have questions and doubts.
We just need two hours of your time-that's all! HEAV can use a number of volunteers at the HEAV tables. If you can help, let Al and Linda Linder know the days and times that work best for your family.
Thursday afternoon and evening is an especially busy time because many first-time attendees are coming to hear the free sessions. This is generally our busiest time at the tables. The vendor hall opens at 5 p.m. on Thursday, so if you choose to help on Thursday afternoon, that means you can shop before Friday workshops begin and you won't miss a thing.
And there's a special perk-volunteers can shop early in the Used Curriculum Sale (UCS) on Friday morning! It takes hundreds of volunteers to make the three-day convention a success-and this is one of our ways of saying thank you!
Can you help us? Yes? Contact Al and Linda Linder at alinder@comcast.net with your name, address, telephone number, and the best e-mail address to use in future correspondence. We can't do this without you!
IRS Updates from GuideStar
The IRS has announced the next round of changes required by the Pension Protection Act of 2006: smaller nonprofits will be required to file Form 990-N starting in 2008, and organizations that fail to file Form 990, 990-EZ, 990-PF, or 990-N for three consecutive years will lose their tax exemptions.
Starting next year, an organization that does not file IRS Form 990 or 990-EZ because its income is $25,000 or less will have to file Form 990-N, the "Electronic Notice (e-Postcard) for Tax-Exempt Organizations Not Required to File Form 990 or 990- EZ." ... Read more
Watch Out Virginia!
Virginia is not the only state seeing the development of virtual schools. Homeschooling was so successful in the State of Missouri that they wanted to do it-but without the parents. You won't believe the results! Read about it in the HSLDA summary entitled Missouri: Virtual Instruction Program- Ticket to Mediocrity
