HEAV Leader Letter
May 18, 2010
Dear ,
It's getting close! The HEAV Convention is almost here, and as a leader there are many ways you can participate--attending convention is just the beginning. Enjoy the Leadership Luncheon as our guest (with gifts, prizes, and encouragement!), take part in our new and exciting "Speed Mentoring" session, go to a workshop on websites for homeschool groups, and volunteer at the HEAV tables, Used Curriculum Sale, or Children's Program.
We also need your help in spreading the word about the convention. Please continue to let the homeschoolers in your group--and the families in your community--know about this three-day event that could change their lives. Ready-to-go resources and descriptions to help you are available here.
There are lots of
opportunities to be part of the best convention ever! Read the details below
and be sure to respond as quickly as possible.
I look forward to seeing you soon!

SPEED MENTORING Be part of a fun, new convention workshop! Friday, June 11, from 3 to 4 p.m.
TOOL, an innovative Fredericksburg support group, shared an idea that inspired a new type of workshop at the HEAV convention--it's called "Speed Mentoring." Be part of this fast-paced workshop, and then take the idea back to your support group! "Speed Mentoring" allows you to connect with new homeschoolers who are overwhelmed with questions about everything related to home education. During this Friday afternoon session from 3 to 4 p.m., new parents will sit face-to-face with an "expert" (that's you!) who can answer their questions. No, you don't have to know everything about homeschooling--you can simply share from your experience. This first-ever, fast-paced convention workshop will allow new homeschoolers to tap into a treasure-trove of information from veteran homeschool moms. New parents will ask a question, then, after an allotted time, a whistle will blow, and they'll move to the next mentor to ask the same questions or shift to another topic. This lively way of sharing information will take no preparation on your part. You'll simply share what you know. Let me know if I can count on you to be on the "Speed Mentoring" team by immediately e-mailing your name, or the names and e-mail addresses of those in your group who are willing to help, to support@heav.org. Note Friday Times: Mentor Volunteers Shop at the Used Curriculum Sale: 9-10 a.m. Leadership Luncheon: 11:30 a.m.-1:15 p.m. Speed Mentoring: 3-4 p.m.

CONVENTION TABLE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - JUNE 11-13 You are the perfect volunteer! HEAV is searching for volunteers to assist at our convention tables. We are very excited about this year's convention, but need your help to listen compassionately to concerns, offer words of encouragement to new homeschooling families, answer questions, and sell books and resources.
As a support group leader and homeschool veteran, you make the perfect volunteer! With your years of experience and wealth of information, you have pearls of wisdom to share with new and veteran homeschool families--you also help put a "face" on HEAV. Convention table volunteers really perform a much-needed service!
The commitment involves a two-hour shift during these convention times: Thursday, June 10, from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 11, from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, June 12, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Al and Linda Linder will be organizing table volunteers again this year. If you'd like to volunteer, please respond by sending them your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address. You can reach Al and Linda Linder at 703-791-2000, Alinder@heav.org, or Linda@heav.org.
Schedules will be developed in May. If you have already volunteered, we thank you in advance for your service.
And don't forget, for two hours of volunteer service, you will receive a pass for early admission to the Used Curriculum Sale!

THERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE! Invite your friends to come with you! Convention offers so much help and encouragement for parents. Shopping for curricula is an important part of the convention, but other things--such as listening to uplifting speakers; learning how to teach specific subjects; and getting help organizing your days, your stuff, and your finances--make it a well-rounded experience. It's also about working with our children (from toddlers to young adults), discovering new resources, building stronger family relationships, and much, much more.
Again this year, we're offering free admission for qualifying parents of preschoolers, allowing them to discover what homeschooling is all about. As always, non-homeschooling grandparents are free. And we still have our free Thursday "How to Begin" sessions for everyone interested in learning how to get started--save your time and energy and send interested parents to these information-packed, free sessions.
