THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Take a Breath and Relax - It's Okay!
Mom and Dad, it's really okay to take a breather. While you may not wish to take a break for the whole summer, it's okay to cut back, and it's okay to take some time off. Honest. You don't even have to "plan" or "organize" to justify it!

CONVENTION REPORT: A WEEKEND BLESSED BY GOD
Home Education: For Their Future

2010 Convention PhotoWith the incredible number of people in attendance, quality of speaking and workshops, and magnitude of resources available, the Lord clearly blessed this convention weekend.

A huge thank you to all of the exhibitors, speakers, HEAV board and staff members, coordinators, volunteers, and the thousands of attendees that made the convention the amazing experience it was. While official convention statistics are still forthcoming, we are excited and awed by the ways the Lord used the event to minister to the families that came. Thank you for your prayers and participation!

Here are just a few convention highlights:
  • Keynote Sessions and Workshops with Ken Ham - Ken Ham's life-changing sessions were the convention highlight for many!

  • Packed How-to-Begin Workshops - The how-to-begin-homeschooling workshops had standing room only as parents of preschoolers and first-time homeschoolers learned the basics to begin the exciting journey of home education. What a joy to see so many families pursuing this educational option!

  • A Huge Used Curriculum Sale - We had our largest used sale yet, with nearly 60,000 items! Everything from educational games to full textbook curriculum was available for bargain prices.

  • A Full Exhibit Hall - With 313 booths, attendees had the opportunity to find every type of resource imaginable in the Exhibit Hall! Whether piled high in arms, packed in strollers, or tucked into rolling carts, families found plenty of treasures in the staggering array of resources!

  • Inspirational Workshops - Each session had nearly 20 workshops from which to choose! Reactions spanned the continuum from laughter to tears as families were encouraged and inspired in their efforts to raise up the next generation.

  • 2010
Convention PhotoAn Action-Packed Children's Program - Life and excitement are two things that characterized the Children's Program this year, which was hosted by Answers in Genesis and had the theme "The Egypt File: Decoding the Mystery of Life."

  • A Collective Vision - Regardless of number of children, theological perspective, or approach to schooling, the convention brought together thousands of families who shared the goal of raising their children for the Lord. It was an amazing time of fellowship and support!
(Our thanks to homeschool graduate Seth Fisher with Through My Lens Photography for the photos! Watch for more photos soon!)

Jared MannCONGRATULATIONS AGAIN! SECOND PLACE GOES TO VIRGINIA HOMESCHOOLER IN
BUBBLE WRAP INVENTOR'S CONTEST

Jared Mann, a 13-year-old homeschooler from Christiansburg, Virginia, won second place in the 2010 Bubble Wrap Competition for Young Inventors. Jared's invention, the "Fridge Guard," has two parts. First, small rolls of Bubble Wrap take up unused space in the refrigerator. Second, "curtains" of Bubble Wrap form partitions, which are lifted to remove food. Jared believes each component represents a 10% savings in the energy needed to cool the refrigerator. Jared received a $5,000 savings bond in a recent New York City ceremony. Jared has quite a knack for this sort of thing--he won third place in the Rubber Band inventor's competition last year!

DO YOU KNOW A HOMESCHOOLER RUNNING FOR OFFICE?

Mike Farris of HSLDA is writing an article about the phenomenon of homeschool parents and graduates running for state and national office in what seems to be record numbers this year, and he could use your help! If you know or have heard of a homeschool parent or graduate who is a candidate for local, state, or federal office this year, please send an e-mail to comdept@hslda.org with the candidate's name, state, and the position for which he or she is running, as well as any contact information you may have.
