Thought for the WeekTHOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Stop and smell the roses. They're right there in front of you--in your preschooler's cheeks. Beware of the tendency to get wrapped up in getting everything done; it will never be all done. This season of your life, like every season of life, will pass before you know it. Savor it while it's here.

- Rick Boyer, homeschooling father of 14 (see below for the full article)

4) Parting Thought - Instead of Coffee...
Among many scarce items during the Civil War was coffee. Newspaper columnists debated the best replacements and extenders including parched cornmeal, rye, acorns, and wheat; the seeds of okra, persimmon, garden peas, and cotton; the roots of sweet potato, beets, dandelion, and chicory (which is endive root); and even the grated crust of dry bread.

If you were unfortunate enough to find yourself in a prison or almshouse during the same period, you might be served "coffee" made from eight pounds of bread crusts (baked until the outside was black) and two gallons of molasses, boiled together with 30 gallons of water.

Your editor will stick to tea, thank you.

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~
5) Worth Repeating
"Children should be educated and instructed in the principles of freedom."
- John Adams (1735-1826), second President of the United States. Children may enjoy seeing some of the many photos on these multi-media pages offered by Adams National Historical Park.

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~
6) Verse of the Week
I will also praise thee with the psaltery, even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
- Psalm 71:22 (KJV)
