THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Dinnertime Conversations

The evening meal can be a valuable training Dinnertime Conversationstime, yet directing dinnertime conversations can sometimes be a challenge! Here's a simple idea to try: Have each person at the table share a couple of praises from the day. You may find it also helps you think of things to be grateful for throughout the day! Some other ideas would be to pick a topic from history to discuss...or have each person share something interesting he heard or learned that day.

What does your family talk about around the table? Share your dinnertime ideas as a comment on the blog.

4) Parting Thought - Advice from an Old Farmer
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

Words that soak into your ears are whispered...not yelled.

Don't corner something you know is meaner than you.

It don't take a very big person to carry a grudge.

Every path has a few puddles.

The best sermons are lived, not preached.

Most of the stuff people worry about ain't never gonna happen anyway.

Don't judge folks by their relatives.

Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.

Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll enjoy it a second time.

If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin'.

The biggest troublemaker you'll probably ever have to deal with watches you from the mirror every mornin'.

Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.

5) Worth Repeating
"A new public mind is to be created. How? Only by creating tens of millions of new individual minds and welding them into a new social mind...
"Through the schools of the world we shall disseminate a new conception of government--one that will embrace all of the collective activities of men; one that will postulate the need for scientific control and operation of economic activities in the interest of all people."
- Harold Rugg, (1886-1960), in The Great Technology, 1933. Rugg, president of the American Educational Research Association and author of 14 social studies textbooks, was a longtime professor of education at Teachers College (Columbia University) and one of the best-known educators as the era of progressive education dawned in the United States.
