JANUARY'S PICK OF THE MONTH - FREE SHIPPING! You Can Teach Your Child Successfully
By
Ruth Beechick
Reviewed by Janice Campbell, long-time homeschool mom and owner of Everyday Education.
School
doesn't have to be overwhelming.
Teaching shouldn't be complicated.
You can teach your child
successfully.
These are some of the simple truths you'll discover in the pages of Ruth
Beechick's classic resource, You Can
Teach Your Child Successfully. Although it's labeled for grades 4-8, it
contains enough valuable information and inspiration that it can be used for
much longer. With its helpful instruction, encouraging tone, and useful charts
for reference, it's the kind of book you'll want to own and share.
Read the rest of the review and take advantage of free shipping (a $4.50 savings)!

HELP WANTED
Registration Coordinator Note: This
position is for next year's 2011
convention, but training this year with the
current registration coordinator is critical for a smooth and successful transition.
We are looking for someone who lives in (or very near) Richmond, has attended the
convention before, and is able to handle a high level of responsibility to join
our convention team as registration coordinator. Good phone, e-mail, computer
(Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.), people, problem-solving, and trouble-shooting
skills are a must.
The workload is fairly light
all year and can be done mainly from home until May. Three weeks prior to the convention, the coordinator will need to come to
the HEAV office every day; they will also oversee on-site
registration during the three days of convention. A stipend is provided. If
interested, please contact the convention director, Flo Feldman, at
757-498-4480.
Office Assistant - With convention, Day at the Capitol, and
various Homeschool Success Seminars and events just around the corner, HEAV is looking
to hire a part-time (20 hours a week) helper from now through early
July. This is a paid position, and duties include a variety of office duties, including
managing the multi-line phone system, processing orders for resources,
fielding questions related to homeschooling in Virginia and the HEAV convention, and completing registrations for convention.
Applicants should have good people, computer, organizational, and
multi-tasking skills, and feel comfortable operating printers, faxes,
and copy machines. If
interested, contact George Lansing at executivedirector@heav.org or 804-278-9200.
Update Content Editor
- Do you love gathering information and ferreting out details? Do you
have godly wisdom and discernment? We are looking for someone to
oversee collecting and evaluating resources for the Update. Position typically takes
5-15 hours per week, and a $75/month stipend is provided. If interested, please
contact Katherine at kloop@heav.org.
Copy Editor/Writer/Marketing Assistant Can
you write compelling, interesting, and engaging copy? Are you a
self-starter? Do you have marketing experience? Can you turn the ideas
and thoughts of others into words? Do you have an eye for grammar and
syntax as well as prose? If so, we are looking for someone to join our
publications team on a part-time basis. Position takes 5 to 10
extremely flexible hours per week; a small stipend is provided. If
interested, please send brief resume or statement of your experience
and two or three writing samples to president@heav.org.

UPCOMING HOMESCHOOL SUCCESS SEMINARS
FREE
ADMISSION! NEXT TUESDAY!

Virginia
Beach, Tuesday, January 19, 2010,
from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Teaching high school at home can seem like a daunting
task. Parents wonder what subjects they should teach; how they can do labs or
teach higher math; what kind of records they should keep; and whether their
students will be able to get into college. At the same time, teens are concerned
about sports, extracurricular activities, prom, and their friends.
Yvonne Bunn,
director of homeschool support for Home Educators Association of Virginia, will
help you find the answers to these questions. After teaching three teens
through high school and preparing them to go off to college, she will share the
benefits and challenges of homeschooling during the high school years.
Representatives
from local co-ops and colleges will also be on hand to answer questions and
hand out information.

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ Article: "The Harms of Homeschooling?
Where Are the Premises?"
Dr.
Brian Ray recently released an article examining claims made by Robin
West in "The Harms of Homeschooling." Dr. Ray examines each of West's
seven
claims, which include educational, economic, and political harms,
pointing out
the lack of evidence for each one. Ultimately, he makes the case that
it all
boils down to a worldview: Who should decide what's best for children,
parents
or the state? Read more on the HEAV blog.
