WELCOME BACK AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Welcome to another year! We hope you've had a wonderful Christmas
season and are enjoying the transition back into "normal" life. Please
don't hesitate
to contact us
if there's anything we can do to help you during this new year--we're
looking forward to serving you in the upcoming months! May the Lord
bless
you as you continue the important work of raising the next generation.
"Therefore,
my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work
of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord."
1 Corinthians 15:58
To those
of you new to the state or to homeschooling-
welcome!
We'd love to
help you get connected with a local support group and answer any
questions you may have. Here are a few resources you may find of
particular interest.
- Beginning Mid-year - This article explains the legal process of beginning homeschooling
mid-year.
- Support Group Directory - We strongly encourage you to connect with a local support
group. We all need one another to encourage and spur us forward!
- How-to-Begin-Homeschooling Seminar - This Thursday! - Get equipped and encouraged! This seminar covers the ins and outs
of the Virginia law, testing and evaluation options, how to choose curriculum,
how to teach several levels at once, how to get the support you need, where to
find the best resources, some things to avoid, and some secrets of success.
- Virginia Homeschool Manual - This
comprehensive guide contains almost 1,000 pages of information--more than 400 of them on a
searchable CD--covering every aspect of homeschooling, from getting started to
college and beyond.
Again, welcome! If there's anything we can do, please just
give us a call at 804-278-9200 or e-mail us at office@heav.org. We have experienced homeschool parents on call
who would be happy to answer questions or provide curriculum counseling.

~:~ HELP WANTED
Registration Coordinator - We need someone who lives in (or very near) Richmond, has attended the
convention before, and is able to handle a high level of responsibility to join
our convention team as registration coordinator. Good phone, e-mail, computer
(Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.), people, problem-solving, and trouble-shooting
skills are a must.
The workload is fairly light
all year and can be done mainly from home except for the three weeks prior to
convention and onsite at the convention. The coordinator will need to come into
the HEAV office daily leading up to the convention, and also oversee on-site
registration for the duration of the convention. A stipend is provided. If
interested, please contact the convention director, Flo Feldman, at
757-498-4480.
Office Assistant - With convention, Day at the Capitol, and
various Homeschool Success Seminars and events around the corner, HEAV is looking
to hire a part-time (20 hours a week) helper from now through early
July. This is a paid position, and duties include a variety of office duties, including
managing the multi-line phone system, processing orders for resources,
fielding questions related to homeschooling in Virginia and the HEAV convention, and completing registrations for convention.
Applicants should have good people, computer, organizational, and
multi-tasking skills, and feel comfortable operating printers, faxes,
and copy machines. If
interested, contact George Lansing at executivedirector@heav.org or 804-278-9200.

High School at Home: Yes, You Can Do It!
Virginia
Beach, Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Teaching high school at home can seem like a daunting
task. Parents wonder what subjects they should teach; how they can do labs or
teach higher math; what kind of records they should keep; and whether their
students will be able to get into college. At the same time, teens are concerned
about sports, extracurricular activities, prom, and their friends.
Yvonne Bunn,
director of homeschool support for Home Educators Association of Virginia, will
help you find the answers to these questions. After teaching three teens
through high school and preparing them to go off to college, she will share the
benefits and challenges of homeschooling during the high school years. View more details.
SCHEDULE A
SEMINAR: If you would like to schedule a How to Begin
Homeschooling Success Seminar in your area, contact the HEAV office at

A New Year's Thought - Keeping Focused on the Mission This
past weekend, our family headed off on a "fieldtrip" to the pentagon.
As we wandered through the hallways, I was struck by the care each
branch of the military had taken to convey its history and mission
through various displays. One Army display particularly grabbed my
attention: I will always place the mission first. Read more.

4) Parting Thought - Why You Need a Proofreader
The first edition of James Joyce's Ulysses contains more than 5,000
typographical errors.
You may have heard about the 1631 King James Bible that
accidentally omitted the word "not" from the seventh commandment that
then read, "Thou shalt commit adultery."
A biography of George Eliot (the pen name of Mary
Anne Evans) referred to the author throughout the writing as "he."
Oops.

~:~ ~:~
~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ 5)
Worth Repeating
"He who
cannot forgive others destroys the bridge over which he himself must
pass."
- George Herbert (1593-1633), Anglican
clergyman and poet. His mother, Magdalen, was a patron and friend of John
Donne. Find a brief bio, along with a few of his poems, here.

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ 6) Verse of the Week
Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me.
