THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Fall Scheduling
Soccer, co-op, art, French, debate--there are so many good activities now available to homeschoolers, it's easy to get in over our heads. As we plan our fall schedules, let's remember to ask the Lord what He wants us to participate in this year, which may be quite different from what we did last year--or from what our friends are doing!

HOMESCHOOLERS HELPING HOMESCHOOLERS

Would you like to partner with HEAV and Home School Foundation to help another homeschool family? We are looking for volunteers to help do a mini home makeover for a family in Newport News. Skilled and unskilled labor is needed to accomplish this one-day makeover on Saturday, August 28.

The makeover includes interior painting, yard work (mowing, edging, weeding, mulching, and fence repair), installing an exhaust fan, replacing a window, hanging blinds, installing shoe molding, moving furniture, and the final decorating. It should be an exciting work-filled day!

If you would like to help, please e-mail Anne Miller at president@heav.org for complete details.

NEW! HOMESCHOOL Q&A
Each week, we receive great questions from parents. Here are a few--along with the answers!

Understanding Work Permits
Q. Does my teen need a work permit to get a job? If so, how does he get one? Are there any hour restrictions for homeschooled teens?

Obtaining Records
Q.Up until this fall, my child has been in public school. Can I get a copy of his school records? I am not sure what my legal rights are.

Transferring High School Credits
Q. My homeschooled son will be entering 11th grade and wants to attend public school. They will not accept any of his homeschool credits. What can we do?

"While the great body of [citizens] are acquainted with the duties which they owe to their God, to themselves, and to men, they will remain free. But if ignorance and depravity should prevail, they will inevitably lead to slavery and ruin."
- Samuel Huntington (1731-1796), signer of the Declaration of Independence. The fourth of 10 children in a Connecticut family, he studied law according to the custom of the time--reading from the library of a local minister under the guidance of lawyers--and then married the pastor's daughter! Upon the death of his brother, Samuel Huntingdon and his wife, who had no children of their own, adopted and raised his brother's son and daughter.
