THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK
Running to the Source
"In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" Colossians 2:3 (KJV). Let's remember this week to continually run to the Source of wisdom--Christ Jesus. May His Word, not our own ideas or man's opinion, ever be our guide.

TESTING DEADLINE THIS SUNDAY - NOI DEADLINE APPROACHING
If you homeschool under the homeschool statute, §22.1-254.1, it's time to send in the results of your evaluation or assessment. They should be sent to your division superintendent by August 1. See our Testing Overview and Testing FAQs for details.

The deadline to let your division superintendent know you will be homeschooling is August 15. The HEAV website has Notice of Intent information, a Notice of Intent form you can download and use, and Notice of Intent FAQs.

Have questions? Not sure if you need to file? Take a look at the online FAQs linked to above. If you don't find the answer to your question, please give us a call (804-278-9200) or send us an e-mail (support@heav.org).

PHONE SCAM AIMED AT HOMESCHOOLERS
Several people have received fraudulent calls from someone pretending to be from the Home School Foundation (HSF) who tells them that they've received a grant/award and then asks questions, including ones about their disciplinary methods and practices (something HSF would never ask).

If you are ever on the phone with someone saying they are from HSF, and you become even slightly suspicious, please ask for a name and number and offer to call back. Then report the phone call to HSLDA. The more information you can gather (call time, etc.), the better. View the Virginia Homeschool Blog for details on how to respond and to submit any information to HSLDA to help them stop this caller.

4) Parting Thought - Odds 'n Ads

"In the far West, a man advertises for a woman 'to wash, iron and milk one or two cows.'"

"Lost a cameo brooch representing Venus and Adonis on the Drumcondra Road at about 10 o'clock on Tuesday evening."

"An inducement to return property is offered as follows: 'If the gentleman who keeps the shoe store with a red head will return the umbrella of a young lady with whalebone ribs and an iron handle to the slate-roofed grocer's shop, he will hear of something to his advantage, as the same is a gift of a deceased mother now no more with the name engraved upon it.'"

"For sale, a handsome piano, the property of a young lady who is leaving Scotland in a walnut case with turned legs."

"A large Spanish blue gentleman's cloak lost in the neighborhood of the market."

- From the book English As She Wuz Wrote, by Anonymous, published in 1883.

5) Worth Repeating
"My Time might have been improved to some Purpose, in mowing Grass, raking Hay, or hoeing Corn, weeding Carrotts [sic], picking or shelling Peas. Much better should I have been employed in schooling my Children, in teaching them to write, cypher, Latin, French, English and Greek."
- John Adams (1735-1826), second president of the United States, in a letter to Abigail Adams dated July 2, 1774. At the beginning of the letter, John lamented that he was quite bored (so he decided to write) and wrote this paragraph, sharing his longing for his routine at home with his family.

6) Verse of the Week
But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
- Psalm 73:28 (KJV)
