Wishing You a Happy Thanksgiving!
Have a wonderful day giving thanks and reflecting on God's many mercies. For a brief history of Thanksgiving, see last week's "Thanksgiving History" from WallBuilders...and for some historic quotes, celebration ideas, coloring sheets, and information, check out a unit study titled "A Look at Thanksgiving." Enjoy!

Many blessings to you and your family!

ThanksgivingFeatured Article: Are We Really Thankful?
By Chris Klicka [Reprinted from a 2006 HEAV Update.]
"Once again we are enjoying our annual celebration of the Thanksgiving holiday. We spend time with family and friends, take time off work, decorate the house, and eat a great feast. As a family we traditionally write notes and slip them in a homemade mailbox and then hand them out to be read out aloud at the Thanksgiving dinner table. It is a beautiful warm time of meditating on God's bountiful blessings.

"But we all need to analyze our hearts that we do not only limit our thanks to the GOOD THINGS or only give thanks at certain times. Instead we need to get in the habit of giving thanks all the time and faithfully thank God for the  "NOT SO GOOD THINGS." God makes it very clear in I Thess. 5:18, "In everything give thanks for this is God's will for you through Christ Jesus."  Does this really mean we should thank God for everything? Even thank God for my gradually deteriorating multiple sclerosis---losing my legs little by little and even my right hand?...

"...If homeschooling is rough this year, the finances are tight, your health is shaky, or your friends are forsaking you, we still need to be thankful. God is using each and every circumstance to bring us closer to Him, and make us more like Jesus. That is what we want and we have much to be thankful for. Most of all we can be thankful that we have a God who gives Himself to us--His comfort, never-ending love, sustaining strength, wisdom, guidance, and overcoming power! He is there with us and will never leave us nor forsake us." Read the rest of "Are We Really Thankful?"

Peel-A-Way CardsEarn Extra Money for Christmas, Extracurriculars, Your Support Group or Team--and Support HEAV at the Same Time!
Needing extra cash for the Christmas season...or maybe for extracurricular activities, a sports program, mission trip, band program, or curriculum? Could your support group use a financial boost? Have an entrepreneurial child?

Selling Peel-A-Way cards is a simple and do-able way to raise funds either as an individual or as a group. People love the cards AND you'll be supporting HEAV at the same time!

How Does It Work?
There are NO up-front costs, risks, storage, or spoilage. You or your group sell Peel-A-Way cards--a credit-card-size coupon card with 32 mini peel-off "Buy-One-Get-One FREE" offers from local merchants. Each card sells for only $12, has a value of more than $150, and is good for 12 months or longer. The purchaser saves the cost of the card on the first or second use!

For every Peel-A-Way card you sell, you or your group will make $4, and HEAV will make $2.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMING UP
Help Get Homeschool Resources in Your Local Library!

Does your library receive the Virginia Home Educator magazine? HEAV is offering freesubscriptions! But we need your help!

Letters are being mailed to libraries next week to tell them about the free magazine, and also the availability of the Virginia Homeschool Manual. So on your next visit, ask the librarian if he or she received our letter and let them know you would like them to acquire these resources for your library--it's that simple!

Note: The letters are scheduled to go out to libraries early next week and should arrive by Friday, December 4.

Help Get the Virginia Home Educator in Medical Offices!
Doctors, dentists, orthodontists, and other medical offices often display magazines for patients to read while waiting. Wouldn't it be wonderful if parents learned about the benefits of home education while waiting to be seen?

At your next appointment, bring a past issue of the Virginia Home Educator with you and ask the receptionist if the office would like to receive a complimentary subscription. HEAV is happy to send the magazine regularly to any medical office--just send their name and address, and a note saying they gave you permission to subscribe them, to office@heav.org!

Thank you for letting others in your community know about home education!

4) Parting Thought - Stuffing
A young lad was sitting in his grandmother's kitchen, watching her prepare the Thanksgiving meal.

"What are you doing?" he inquired.

"Oh, I'm just stuffing the turkey," his grandmother replied.

"Wow, that's cool," he replied. "Are you going to hang it next to the deer?"

5) Worth Repeating
"The unthankful heart... discovers no mercies; but let the thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings!"
-Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), Congregationalist minister, social reformer, and abolitionist. He was the seventh of 13 siblings in his family. Considered bashful and mumbling as a child, he became a well-known lecturer.
