A Great Day at the Fair!
Last
Monday, nearly 500 homeschool parents and children attended the Virginia State
Fair. The fair was held at a new location this year just east of King's
Dominion (about 20 minutes north of Richmond). It was definitely worth the
additional drive time! The new location reminded me of the rural, open, grassy
pastures of the county fairs of my Mississippi youth, rather than the crowded,
dusty, urban location of past years at the Richmond Raceway.
I
enjoyed meeting some of you all while standing next to the State Fair tent
erected for School Day along with my daughter, Emily, and Tommy Hoopsick, a
homeschooler from Colonial Heights. When we were through, we'd handed out 146
bottles of cold water, several fliers, and lots of "Home School's Cool"
stickers!
Be
sure to mark your 2010 calendar for Homeschool Day at the State Fair. This
annual event is something HEAV works with the State Fair to make possible. It's
a great way to see the fair at a discount...and to expose the public to
homeschooling! You can bring a picnic lunch; get the discounted HEAV tickets;
buy an Elephant Ear; stay for hours seeing the animals, crafts, and giant
pumpkins; ride the rides; and still not spend your entertainment budget for the
month. Look forward to seeing you there next year!

~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ Homeschool Mother in New Hampshire Forced to Send 10-Year-Old Daughter to Public School Brenda
Kurowski has homeschooled her daughter for years. But now the court has
ordered her to send her daughter to public school because the girl
"'appeared to reflect her mother's rigidity on questions of
faith' and that the girl's interests 'would be best served by exposure
to a public school setting' and 'different points of view at a time
when she must begin to critically evaluate multiple systems of belief
...
in order to select, as a young adult, which of those systems will best
suit her own needs.'' Read the details on HEAV's Virginia Homeschool Blog, and please keep this family in your prayers!

Virginia Homeschooled Lad Makes
Documentary Debut
Richard
Warren, a homeschooled 10-year-old from Salem, recently portrayed Richard
Kirkland in a Civil War documentary. In this true story, he reenacted the "The
Angel of Marye's Heights," who volunteered to cross enemy lines to take water
to wounded Union soldiers during fighting near Fredericksburg. Warren enjoys
studying all aspects of Civil War history and has given his performance a
number of times. You can search for "Richard Kirkland" on YouTube to see his
short speech as Kirkland.

4) Parting Thought -
At the
Doctor's Office
While I sat in the reception area of my doctor's
office, a woman rolled an elderly man in a wheelchair into the room. As she
went to the receptionist's desk, the man sat there, alone and silent.
Just as I was thinking I should make small talk with
him, a little boy slipped off his mother's lap and walked over to the
wheelchair. Placing his hand on the man's, he said, "I know how you feel.
My mom makes me ride in the stroller too."

5)
Worth Repeating
"B-81. Home Schooling. The
National Education Association believes that home schooling programs based on
parental choice cannot provide the student with a comprehensive education
experience. When home schooling occurs, students enrolled must meet all state
curricular requirements, including the taking and passing of assessments to
ensure adequate academic progress. Home schooling should be limited to the
children of the immediate family, with all expenses being borne by the
parents/guardians. Instruction should be by persons who are licensed by the
appropriate state education licensure agency, and a curriculum approved by the
state department of education should be used."
- From the 2009 National Educational Association resolutions, as
passed at their annual convention. A good reminder that we can't let up our
guard!

6) Verse of the Week
Nevertheless I am continually with
thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy
counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
- Psalms 73:23-24 (KJV)
