AnnaA Note of Thanks
Most of you don't know, but almost three years ago, a 14-year-old homeschooled teen, Anna Dykhoff, took over as our Update graphic designer. Because of the weekly pressure to produce the newsletter you are now reading, we weren't sure a young teen could handle the job, but we thought we'd give her a try.

I can honestly say, for the last three years, Anna has completely amazed and blessed us with her faithfulness, diligence, maturity, and lovely newsletters! We cannot speak too highly of her
character and sweet spirit. In all this time, she has never uttered one word of complaint--even when there were delays or other publication challenges--and trust me, with a 10- to 18-page weekly newsletter, there are ALWAYS challenges!

We knew we couldn't keep her forever, and are excited for her as she begins her senior year of high school, takes community college and online classes, and works as a publishing intern and for Chick-fil-A.

Anna, we have greatly appreciated you and will sorely miss your ever-cheery attitude and energy--we pray for the Lord's blessing and direction in your life and wish you all the best!

Anne Miller

Homeschooler's Guide To...The Homeschooler's Guide To...
"This unique book is for folks who are looking for more than just basic schooling information. Mrs. Caurana has collected a number of articles (chapters) on a variety of topics ranging from testing to home-based business." Read the rest of the review.

Love and RespectLove and Respect
"Your marriage doesn't need to be rocky to benefit from this book. If you are struggling, Dr. Eggerichs' message could turn your marriage and your life around. Ever wonder how a believing wife could win her husband to the Lord without a word? (1 Peter 3:1) Check out this book!" Read the rest of the review.

The Socialization TrapThe Socialization Trap
"If you homeschool, you've probably heard the challenge, "What about socialization?" Well, The Socialization Trap by Rick Boyer is the definitive answer. Using scriptural principles, documented research, and anecdotal evidence, Rick presents an overwhelming case in favor of a home discipleship model of social learning, in his own entertaining and down-to-earth style." Read the rest of the review.

Willi Gets a History Lesson Willi Gets a History Lesson in Virginia's Historic Triangle
"Dr. Ellen Rudolph, the author of the book, has successfully created a fun-filled, but educational story that gives a memorable, albeit wacky tour of the historic area from a dog's perspective. Willi, who gets separated from her owner at Jamestown Settlement, takes the reader on a journey of learning and adventure." Read the rest of the review.

Capitol BuildingCapitol Classroom Connects with Homeschoolers
The educational arm of the Virginia General Assembly wants to include input from homeschoolers in their complete revamp of the Capitol Classroom website!

Maggie Massie, director of legislative education and development, knows homeschoolers actively use the Capitol Classroom website, especially in preparation for HEAV's annual Day at the Capitol. She recently invited HEAV's Yvonne Bunn to join a group of approximately 25 public and private school teachers, principals, VCU department heads, and representatives of the legislative education department for an all-day brainstorming session.

During the session, committee members clearly defined a mission statement for the Capitol Classroom site, and then brainstormed ways to make the site more dynamic and interactive. Participants suggested many applications to emphasize the rich history of the capitol and provide a better understanding of the legislative process. The General Assembly IT group anticipates the project will take several years to complete. We will be sure to let you know when it's finished!

4) Parting Thought - Most Richly Blessed

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve;
I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey.
I asked for health, that I might do greater things;
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things.

I asked for riches, that I might be happy;
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men;
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God.

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life;
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for--but everything I had hoped for.
Almost despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.
I am, among all men, most richly blessed.

- Author Unknown (possibly written by a Confederate soldier)
