Encourage Good Study Habits with STUDYPOD
Book Holder!
STUDYPOD offers a simple change to studying that has a large impact. It improves organization & focus, frees hands for writing & typing, great for tutoring, alleviates neck strain, and ultimately reduces study time. It also makes a great fundraising item. See us at the HEAV Convention in Booth 426.
IMPORTANT UPDATES
Jessica Hulcy
Please keep praying for healing for Jessica
Hulcy and for continued comfort and strength
for her
family. She has improved a great deal since
last week's update and is able to breathe on
her own with only the help of an oxygen tube
in her nose. She can now sit up, eat small
amounts of food, talk in a whisper, and even
quote scripture! Even with these wonderful
improvements, Jessica still has a long road
of recovery ahead and needs your continued
prayer support. The family has
set up a
CaringBridge page where you can read more.
Updated Workshops and Schedule
Five new workshops have been inserted to replace
those Jessica Hulcy had planned to give. All the
workshops are on similar topics to those
originally
scheduled. An updated
Schedule-at-a-Glance is available for
download.

Free Science
Experiments - Air Pressure
Here are some
quick-and-easy experiments you can do at
home
to teach your children about aeronautics--one
of the
fundamental areas of engineering. Also check
out the
HEAV-co-sponsored Supercharged Science
Camp coming to Virginia this June.
Note: Supercharged Science will be at the HEAV
convention, and needs volunteers there. If
you're
already familiar with Supercharged Science and
would be interested in attending the camp for
FREE,
check out their volunteer offer.
A Keynote...at Last!
Our search for the Friday morning keynote has
finally come to an end! Our
convention director, Florence
Feldman, will
be delivering a heart-felt message on this
year's convention theme, "Turning Our Hearts
Toward Home."
For months, we've been considering different speakers. Over and over again, the door kept getting shut, and an important message became clearer and clearer to Flo. Come kick off the convention with us and find out why--and how--to turn your heart toward home and focus on what really matters! Read the workshop description online--you won't want to miss it!

Featured Track: Struggling Learners
Are things not quite clicking? Do you have a
bright, inquisitive child who doesn't seem to
be getting it? Or who suffers with
hyperactivity, an attention deficit, or
behavior problems? Come hear Dianne Craft's
concrete solutions and techniques based on
the latest brain research, Steve Demme's
encouraging testimony of finding hope and
grace while working with his special-needs
son, and Carol Barnier's humorous dose of
help for that highly distractible child. View track
workshops.
Are You Ready for the Used Curriculum Sale?
The HEAV Used Curriculum Sale, held at the HEAV
convention, is a MEGA opportunity to get
homeschool
resources at a bargain--and to sell those
items you
don't need! Find more details on the
Used Curriculum Sale pages.
The barcode system will close on Wednesday, June 10, 2009, at 4 p.m., so start inputting your books today!
It's Not Too Late to Volunteer!
To those of you who have volunteered, thank
you! We
appreciate your help very much. If you haven't
volunteered yet, it's not too late! We could
still use
volunteers for the convention in LOTS of
different
areas. Simply contact our volunteer
coordinator via our
Volunteer Checklist.
Note: All volunteers must be registered for the convention. This includes children and young adults--you cannot bring your children to volunteer unless they are registered.
Help Needed at Taping Tables
Broad Reach Recording needs volunteer helpers at
their taping tables at the convention Friday and
Saturday, June 12 and 13. Training is at 9
a.m. on
Friday morning at the taping tables.
This is a
great opportunity for responsible teens and young
adults
to help out and gain a little experience.
Broad Reach
would like commitments of several hours at a
time,
since they will have to do some training.
Half-day
blocks would be ideal. Help is needed with
both sales
and production. If interested, contact Mrs.
DeFazio at
VolunteerNow@heav.org.
Volunteers Needed in the Children's Program
Volunteers 13 and up are needed to help in the
Children's Program at the convention as team
leaders, helpers, and runners. For more
information
or to volunteer, go to the CCI website.
Volunteers Needed at Graduation
We're looking for able-bodied men who would be
willing to put on suits and ties and help
with crowd
control on Saturday, June 13, 2009, before the
graduation ceremony. There are always a lot
of people
(graduates' families and friends) wandering
the halls
during this time that would definitely
appreciate a
friendly face and someone to point them in
the correct
direction. If you are willing to serve in
this way, please
contact Wendy Fish at
graduation@heav.org or 804-278-9200.
Bring Your Golden Gift Certificates and
Box Tops
to Convention!
Attention Ukrop customers! Turn your Ukrop
Golden Gift certificate into support for
Virginia
homeschoolers by sending it in to the HEAV
office
(2248 G Dabney Road, Richmond, VA 23230)...or by
bringing it with you to convention and giving
it to HEAV
at registration!
New this year! There will be boxes at the convention for Box Top labels. Although tiny, Box Top labels can support homeschooling in a BIG way! So...before you toss that next food box or can, check to see if it has a Box Top label. Then collect the labels, trim them neatly, rubber band them in sets of 50, put them in a zip lock bag along with a completed form, and bring them with you to turn in at the convention! See www.heav.org/events/boxtops for more details.
HOMESCHOOLING MAKES THE NEWS
Homeschooling has made it into the news quite
a bit
lately--and in many positive ways! Please
pray this
exposure will be used to introduce new
families to
homeschooling, and keep our publicity team in
your
prayers as they continue to work with the
media both
leading up to and during the convention.

Conversational Hebrew Booklet
First, mom checks three books on electricity
out of the
library. Then, the kids make models of light
bulbs,
read a biography of Thomas Edison, and do a skit
based on his life.
Next, everyone studies the history of lighting methods, wrapping up with dipping their own candles.
Everyone then takes a trip to the store where they compare types of light bulbs as well as prices and figure out how much change they'll get if they buy two bulbs for $1.99 and pay with a $5 bill.
On the way home, a discussion develops over the history of money and also Abraham Lincoln, as his picture is on the $5 bill.
Finally, after building a homemade ladder out of branches dragged from the woods, the light bulb is installed.
And there is light.
