LOOK MA - NO HANDS!

During World War II, an errant Allied bomb destroyed a statue of Jesus in a little church courtyard in France. When the fighting was passed, the
church members went about picking up the pieces -- literally. They were able to reconstruct everything on the statue, except for the hands, which
had been turned to dust. The members agreed to replace the statue, until someone came up with an idea.

Today, if you should visit this church, you will see that same reconstructed statue, with no hands and one addition. A brass plaque, at the base
of the statue, simply reads: "I have no hands but yours."

Often, organizations like HEAV find ourselves in a similar situation. The work is so great and our resources are limited. We need the hands of
others. Such is our present circumstance of trying to get the current convention issue of The Virginia Home Educator magazine into as many places
as we can. This is a great opportunity for us, and for future Virginia homeschoolers, but we really could use some hands right now.

We are looking for volunteers to coordinate the distribution of the magazines, and deliverers to actually place the magazines. We had good
response to our plea in our March 14, 2006, HEAV Update issue. And we are so very grateful for all those who responded to our initial plea. But we
still have needs in the following geographic areas of Virginia:

Abingdon
Blacksburg
Bristol
Chesapeake
Danville
Emporia
Fairfax
Farmville
Front Royal
Hampton
Harrisonburg
Newport News
Leesburg
Lexington
Manassas
Middle Peninsula
Norfolk
Northern Neck areas
Petersburg
Richmond
South Hill
Staunton
Suffolk
Winchester
Virginia Beach
Wytheville

To volunteer, please contact us at heavvolunteers@heav.org. And thank you for your willingness to lend a hand.

Leaders may chose from topics provided or submit their own ideas. They will be expected to 'flesh out' budget items and details. IWCMF would like to include a high-school-level homeschool group. Set in these exquisite backdrops, downtown Hampton's Mill Point Park will come alive as guests 'visit' countries most would experience only in their dreams.

The rhythmic pounding of Djembe drums, the tastes of exotic dishes, and geography long forgotten will weave a colorful tapestry of stories from the represented countries and cultures.

2.9 Online Writing Units

This Web site (http://www.ProfessorDick.com) offers three free units (of 24-lesson studies) in story writing, in article writing, and in opinion writing under a "Sell Your Homework" banner. The 24 lessons can supply curriculum for 24 or 48 weeks and can be used year after year as children mature. Each additional lesson in the series costs $4, but that amount does not have to be paid until the student is ready for the next one.

Dr. Dick Bohrer, the man behind the Web site, has taught as full professor of journalism and English at Liberty University, as head of the magazine sequence at Ball State University, and as chairman of the journalism department at Multnomah School of the Bible (now Multnomah Bible College).

3) PARTING THOUGHT: "Junk food"
~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~ ~:~

Grandma and grandpa didn't keep "junk food" out in the open when the grandkids came to visit. Splurging one evening, they set out some munchies.

"What vitamins are in these?" the young grandson asked.

"I doubt there are any at all," grandpa confessed.

The boy replied, wide-eyed, "You mean these are just for fun?"
