Love & Respect
by Emerson Eggerichs
Reviewed by Anne Miller
Since, apparently, wives are the ones who purchase the marriage-help books, I'm addressing my review to my sisters in the Lord.
Almost every teaching I've ever heard says husbands are to unconditionally love their wives as Jesus loves his Church. No problem there. (Do I hear cheering?) However, I don't recall ever hearing a sermon or a teaching (except from my parents) that says wives are to unconditionally respect their husbands. Why is that? Mostly, I believe, because we've been brought up to believe that respect must be earned...but guess what, that's not what the Bible says! Emerson Eggerichs not only puts Ephesians 5:33 in a new light, he gives the nuts and bolts of what unconditional respect (and love) look like.
Wives, if you're wondering if you need this book, try this experiment: Make a list -- mentally or on paper -- of five things you respect about your husband -- not what you love, what you respect. Then, share your list with your husband, and judge the response for yourself.
Your marriage doesn't need to be rocky to benefit from this book. If you are struggling, Dr. Eggerichs' message could turn your marriage and your life around. Ever wonder how a believing wife could win her husband to the Lord without a word? (1 Peter 3:1) Check out this book!
[This is also an exceptional book for husbands...and once they experience the newly-found expressions of respect, they may even want to read it! Judging from my own experience and from the evaluations of husbands who heard Dr. Eggerichs at the convention in June -- husbands LOVE this message!]

HEAV Homeschool Success Seminar - Overcoming Disorder - Richmond
Thursday, August 23, 2007
Time, space, stuff, finances, housework, school work, meals, and laundry--everything requires some degree of organization. If you don't have a handle on organization, you are at the mercy of everything instead of being captain of your own ship.
Do you feel there is not enough of you to go around and too much of everything else? Are you overwhelmed, embarrassed and discouraged? Or do you just want more order in your life?
Come to this life-changing event, led by Florence Feldman, HEAV's convention director. As a young mother and wife she was overwhelmed and out of control. Through many challenging and difficult experiences she discovered many truths about getting and staying organized and has been sharing them with others as a professional organizing consultant for the past 25 years.
You'll be encouraged, informed, inspired and clear about what you have to do to bring order out of chaos. This workshop will get to the roots of disorder and plant the seeds for healthy functioning which are both scriptural and practical.

Dear Parents,
Many of you helped a student from George Mason University named John Lavoie with research for his paper on the origins of homeschooling. He wrote to thank all who assisted and to let us see the finished product, which earned an A+! You may read the paper, "A Qualitative Analysis of the Parental Decision-Making behind Choosing Home Schooling," here.

Once Again Homeschoolers Score High on the ACT Exam
Recently released statistics show the 2006 average ACT composite score for home-schooled students was 22.4 compared to the national average composite of 21.1.
Homeschoolers have an unbroken record for the last 10 years--since 1996 when they started tracking them--of scoring higher on the ACT than the national average. This academic success continues through college.
The bottom line is: Homeschooling works!

1.5 Home Exchange - 2008
Home Educated Learn More while Traveling (HELM Travel) was started by a homeschooler to facilitate lower-cost travel by arranging home trades with fellow homeschoolers. They are organizing a pool of families who are looking to enrich their children's education through hands-on learning experiences, or just to take a trip to enjoy family time together. Homeschooling families will exchange their primary residence, a second/vacation home, maybe even a timeshare that isn't being used. You may also choose to host another family in your home rather than exchanging during one, two or three pre-designated dates. You can even exchange in the spring and host in the fall.
Dates for 2008: April 20-27, June 20-27, and September 20-27.
Home Exchange is a fantastic way to reduce travel costs, promote goodwill, and develop long-lasting friendships. The more families who sign up, the more choices of destinations for everyone.

1.9 Seeking Input: Offer Physics Online?
Dr. Lawrence James, a gentleman with a Ph.D. in physics and a grandfather to some homeschoolers, has taught and tutored both high school and college physics. He is seeking input from the homeschool community on the level of interest in year-long online high school physics courses, including AP physics. Course components would include an Internet classroom (twice a week), a threaded discussion, virtual laboratory, and actual home laboratory assignments.
How do homeschool students compare to traditional students in the sciences and engineering? Do you see a need for this kind of course? What price range would you consider reasonable? How much time per week in class would be reasonable? How much time for out of class work would be reasonable?

Flowerdew Hundred is one of the earliest original land grants in Virginia. The museum is housed in an original c.1850 schoolhouse. Extensive exhibits highlight the plantation's history and over 25 years of archaeological exploration. See artifacts from Native American, Colonial, Antebellum, and Civil War sites. Hands-on displays demonstrate grinding food and the natural history of Flowerdew Hundred. Tour a replicated 1820 detached kitchen, with exhibits that explore domestic slave life. Conclude your tour with a guided interpretive drive of more than four miles of riverfront, taking you past historic and former archaeological sites, the site of Grant's Crossing, and Flowerdew's unique commemorative windmill.
Educational Programs
Museum staff will customize field trips and provide classroom materials for student groups. Groups are limited to a maximum of 50 students and reservations are required. Younger students (ages 3-7) may participate in nature programs that emphasize the agricultural use of the property and wildlife population. Older students (generally ages 8-14) may work directly with artifacts and primary documents. Additional program components include mapping, orienteering, adaptive use of historic structures, and windmill technology. Fees vary with programs.
