Homeschooling Succeeds!
The Proffitt family began homeschooling in 1995 with their oldest, six-year-old Kate. Kate's mom, Pam, felt overwhelmed by the responsibilities, but she and her husband attended their first homeschool convention and said they were encouraged and supported. She graciously credits HEAV with a role in their subsequent success. Kate entered Virginia Commonwealth University at age 14 on a four-year merit scholarship. Now at 17, majoring in biomedical engineering, Kate has won the Goldwater Scholarship in a national competition. Read the article about her recent accomplishment and her success at VCU.

Speech & Debate--You Will Never Be the Same!

The National Christian Forensics & Communications Association will have its Region IX Championship Tournament in Newport News. To appreciate it, you really have to see competitive speech and debate--it could change the direction of your child's education.

Be inspired. If you are home educating your children (any age), come and watch these regional competitors. If anything will challenge you to continue homeschooling through high school, this tournament will.

Be amazed. If you are at all discouraged about the apathy of our youth today, come and be encouraged. These young people represent a growing community who are excited about speaking up for Christ--not just from pulpits, but in their daily lives, making an impact in their workplaces--be it a farm field or Capitol Hill.

Be an influence. You will provide a great service to these young people by being a judge. We cannot run tournaments without judges. (No experience is required. Training will be provided throughout the day.) This tournament will require more than 200 judges. We ask that you try to commit to a block of four (4) hours (two rounds and training). You would be surprised at how many judges come to serve at tournaments and wish they could stay longer or who ask to come back again.

TOURNAMENT DATES: Thursday through Saturday, April 26-28, 2007, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Tabernacle Baptist Church, 401 Lucas Creek Road, Newport News, VA 23602

If you are willing to be a judge, please go to

5) Parting Thought - Rule of Swallowed Coins

When your first-born child swallows a coin, you rush the child to the hospital and demand x-rays.

When a second-born child swallows a coin, you carefully watch for the coin to pass.

When your third-born child swallows a coin, you deduct it from his allowance!

3.6 DLTK's Printable Crafts

Our thanks to a former board member and our bill reader, Caroline Barnes, for reminding us of a great website with lots of printables. Find ABC's, 1-2-3's, shapes, and more for the youngest; holiday coloring and crafts; Bible crafts; information, crafts, and activities for learning about other countries and cultures; as well as educational materials to add color to many subject areas. Check it out for Mother's Day greeting cards and crafts.

3.7 Animated Atlas U.S. History Timeline

As with many timelines, this one is divided into several topics presented in parallel: states, territories, presidents, society, Native Americans, the world, science, and culture, spanning the years 1780 to 2000. On the homepage there is a 10-minute interactive movie on the geographic development of the country, teacher guidelines, and links to more information including maps and primary sources. Scroll to the bottom of the homepage to see all the links.

3.8 How to Study

This commercial site has a list of free tutorials in addition to the materials they sell. Topics include preparing to study, essay tests, test anxiety, multiple-choice tests, study groups, procrastination, and college success. They update often, so check back again. When you click on a title, wait a moment for it to load, then scroll down. It will look as if nothing happened, but the text appears lower on the page.

3.9 Webster's 1828 Dictionary

While it's nice to have a hardbound book or CD copy, this online edition is free. Noah Webster wrote the first dictionary of American English. He often used Scripture in illustrating correct usage of words, and his work is notably patriotic.

3.10 Audio Stories from the U.K.

It seems children's stories told in a British accent are all the more appealing. This site features different stories weekly. Some are classics like Alice In Wonderland, others are newly written. The children can listen while you turn your attention elsewhere for a little bit.
