SPECIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Experience "hands-on leaning"
at its best! Homeschool students have been invited to the Virginia House
or Senate Chamber to sit in a member's chair to debate and vote on
a mock bill. Parents can observe from the gallery above the chamber
floor or participate on the floor if there is room in the chamber.
After an explanation of how
a bill becomes a law by House or Senate staff, participants will be
led in a mock session to discuss and then vote on the legislation. Students
will press the same voting buttons legislators use to pass or defeat
a bill. After the Chamber Presentation, House and Senate staff will
answer questions from parents and students.

FUN ACTIVITIES AND TOURS
As in past years, we will offer
a fun scavenger hunt for parents and students on the Capitol grounds,
as well as tours of the Virginia State Capitol and Visitor's Center,
the Executive Mansion, and the Supreme Court. Select legislators will
be invited to discuss homeschool issues.
You may participate in all
or some of the following activities:
-
Take part in a mock
General Assembly session from the House or Senate floor for a hands-on
lesson on how our laws are made.
-
Find out how to
become a page in the General Assembly.
-
Hear guest legislators
address our group and respond to your questions.
-
Go on a fun Capitol
grounds scavenger hunt.
-
Tour the newly renovated
Capitol and/or Executive Mansion.
-
Visit the Virginia
Supreme Court.
-
Hear HEAV's lobbyist
discuss up-to-the-minute homeschool legislation and issues.
