Mariners’ Museum Homeschool Day 2008
Homeschoolers explored more than 500 years of seafaring
adventure during the HEAV-sponsored Mariners'
Museum Homeschool Day held on May 15, 2008! Below are just a few highlights.
- The U.S.S. Monitor-Mariners' Museum is home to
one of America's premier Civil War attractions--the U.S.S. Monitor. Homeschool
students and parents gained an insider understanding of the people, technology,
and science behind the historic Battle of Hampton Roads between the Monitor and
Merrimac as they walked the full-scale replica, looked at artifacts, and
learned how the famous ironclad was rescued from the bottom of the ocean.
- Educational Exhibits--The Age of
Exploration exhibit showed the importance of the sea in developing
civilizations. Students learned how researchers use the museum's collection to
understand mankind's experience with the sea and the events that shaped
civilizations all over the world. The
Chesapeake Bay display showed the history of life on the bay, from oyster
shucking to championship sailing. The military exhibit, Defending the Seas, emphasized the importance of sea power
throughout history.
- A Well-Organized
Resource Fair-The Resource Fair provided lots of fun and hands-on
crafts and games for homeschoolers. Students made pictures and designs from
shells, stenciled pirate symbols on cardboard, and played giant floor puzzle game.
