College admission can be confusing, but homeschool families can find their way through the maze of forms and procedures that accompany the application process. Following these steps can make the process of college application smoother.
Meet the College Catalog Requirements
All colleges have general conditions for admission which are usually outlined in a catalog. Obtain current catalogs from colleges of interest. Most general conditions for admission presume a high-school program that has included at least the MINIMUM number of academic credits as required by the state in which you graduate from high school. A typical course of study would include at least 20 units in the following areas: English/Language Arts (4 units), Mathematics (2 units), Science (2 units), American History (1 unit), Economics (1/2 unit), Physical Education (1 unit), Health (1/2 unit), and Electives (9 units).
Take Your Standardized Tests Early
Depending on the requirements of the college to which you are applying, take the ACT or SAT. Some colleges accept either. The best time to take the SAT or ACT tests is in the fall prior to graduating from high school. Tests are given periodically and schedules can be obtained from your local public or private schools.
Maintain a High-School Transcript
Most colleges will probably require a formal document from you as part of their admission requirements. They will probably also ask for a transcript prior to your last semester in order to make a preliminary decision on your application and to offer you appropriate financial aid. Check with the admissions office of the college to find the requirements for an acceptable high-school transcript. (This is best done early in the high-school years so appropriate records can be kept.)
Apply Early For Admission
Apply early to the college of your choice so that all the necessary paperwork can be completed in a timely manner. Each college has slightly different admission requirements and deadlines, so check these carefully in the college catalogs and be sure to meet them.
Apply Early For Financial Aid
You may not think that you will qualify, but you will never know until you try! Just ask the admissions or financial aid office to send you the appropriate financial aid form.
While this may sound very confusing, it really isn't. Every college has slightly different guidelines so you must research each one to see which will work best for your family. As evidenced by the list of colleges that have accepted homeschoolers, college is attainable for those who prepare.
